Theory Bites: Pump Out Vanes and Balancing Holes: Taming Hydraulic Axial Thrust

Theory bites is a collection of basic hydraulic theory and will touch upon pump design and other areas of pump industry knowledge.

In centrifugal pumps, managing hydraulic axial thrust is crucial for ensuring longevity and reliability. Two effective design features to mitigate this thrust are pump out vanes and balancing holes.โฃ
โฃ
Pump Out Vanes (POVs)โฃ

POVs, also known as back vanes or expellers, are small vanes located on the rear shroud of the impeller. Their primary function is to reduce the pressure behind the impeller, thereby decreasing the axial force pushing the impeller toward the suction side. As the impeller rotates, these vanes impart velocity to the fluid in the annular space, effectively lowering the pressure on the rear shroud. This design is cost-effective and widely used to balance axial thrust. โฃ
โฃ
Balancing Holes

Balancing holes are strategically drilled through the impeller’s rear shroud, allowing high-pressure fluid from the back of the impeller to recirculate to the suction side. This pressure equalization reduces the axial thrust acting on the impeller. While effective, incorporating balancing holes can lead to a slight decrease in pump efficiency due to the intentional leakage flow. โฃ
โฃ
Design Considerationsโฃ
โฃ
Efficiency Trade-offs: While both methods reduce axial thrust, they can introduce minor efficiency losses. POVs may increase disc friction losses, and balancing holes can cause internal leakage. Therefore, it’s essential to balance thrust reduction with overall pump efficiency. โฃ
โฃ
Application Specificity: The choice between pump out vanes and balancing holes depends on the pump’s design and operational requirements. For instance, vertical pump impellers often avoid POVs due to axial clearance concerns, favoring balancing holes instead. โฃ
โฃ
By thoughtfully integrating these features, engineers can enhance pump performance and extend bearing life.โฃ
