It has been an honor for Empowering Pumps & Equipment over the years to shine a light on the professionals behind the industries that are vital to life and share their stories with our #PumpTalk Community. We are proud to have Toni Neary as our March #Pumptalk Celebrity. She is the Director of Community Engagement and Workforce Innovation at SME.
“Find an ally, advocate, or mentor. It is not always easy to break into a new field, but there are so many in our industry that are eager to help grow the pipeline.”
Q: How did you get started working in your field?
Toni: I really stumbled into manufacturing. But quickly fell in love with the industry. I started in inside sales at ToolingU, and then helped form and grow the workforce education team.
As I got to know the educators in manufacturing I felt compelled to help with some of the issues they were experiencing.
Through that position I really took a deep dive into workforce development and manufacturing to see where we could replicate and scale programs and methodologies that were working.
Q: What do you love the most about your job? What are you most proud of?
Toni: I work with the most amazing people. From manufacturers, educators, co-workers, and our leadership. Just the best people.
Committed to improving the lives of all.
I am proud of the fact that 20 years ago when I started I was frequently the only female in the room. That is changing. I love seeing manufacturing becoming more diverse.
Q: What advice would you give to someone considering this line of work or new to the field?
Toni: Find an ally, advocate, or mentor. It is not always easy to break into a new field, but there are so many in our industry that are eager to help grow the pipeline. Reach out and connect with as many people as you can.
Q: Can you talk about a project you recently worked on?
Toni: I am currently working on a project to grow STEM equity for K-8 students. Making a connection with STEM and industry 4.0, as well as meeting students where they are.
This is a legacy project that will have an impact long after I am gone. Something my kids can be truly proud of.
Q: Anything else you would like to add?
Toni: We have so many amazing people in manufacturing, eager to connect and help the talent pipeline grow.
If you are thinking of STEM careers, check out advanced manufacturing and engineering. There are some great opportunities.
