Pump condition monitoring programs can range from using portable vibration and temperature measuring devices all the way to a full array of vibration and temperature sensors connected to the DCS computer system that can store, analyze, and alert nearby operating personnel. The level of pump monitoring used by an organization should be proportional to the associated risk level, i.e., the greater the risk level the more sophisticated the monitoring system that is justified. Some possible pump monitoring strategies are listed in Table 18.1, along with their advantages and disadvantages.
