Meet a Woman Engineer: Doris Davis

“Scientists study the world as it is; engineers create the world that has never been.”~Theodore von Karman, Hungarian-American mathematician, aerospace engineer, and physicist

KSB Inc. is celebrating Engineers Week (Feb 18-24, 2018) by allowing Empowering Pumps to shine a light on some of their most talented engineering professionals! We had the great honor of talking with Doris Davis (above left), an Application Engineering Supervisor with KSB Inc., and this is what she had to share:

Q. How did you decide to become an engineer? What inspired you?

Doris: In school, I had been asking “uncomfortable” questions about the ‘why’ and ‘how’. Some teachers didn’t go into enough details for me. So I started doing some research on my own. There was no internet in the ’70s, but I was lucky to have a good friend with an extensive scientific library at home. Finding answers, but also a lot more new questions, took me to the engineering path.

Q. What do you love most about being an engineer?

Doris: Engineering is not a job. It’s a profession – a mindset. Not being satisfied with an answer of “That’s how it’s always been” or “It’s just the way it is”. Finding new solutions through connecting the dots and appreciation of the work that has been done before us.

Q. What advice would you give to the next generation of engineers?

Doris: Don’t stop being curious. Use the tools you have, but don’t rely on them solely. Common sense still is the most powerful force for any engineer.

On behalf of the entire Empowering Brands’ team, THANK YOU for your contributions to the Pump Industry! We look forward to keeping in touch with you over the course of your career!

Meet KSB’s other Engineers – Julie Ballard, P.E., and Jacqueline Jones!
