Meet Gurpreet Singh
Gurpreet Singh is a Mechanical Engineer in the field of Water Pumps since 2005 and currently living in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. During his professional career, he has worked in many esteemed companies, including Grainger and Grundfos. At this time, Gurpreet is the Director in All-Flow Technologies Canada, dealing in the field of pumps, valves, and automation for residential, commercial, oil & gas, irrigation/livestock, and industrial applications. He is the current member of Alberta Water and Wastewater Operator’s Association (AWWOA) and a member of PMI Northern Alberta Chapter. We are so honored that Gurpreet, who goes by the nickname “Sunny” on our bi-monthly live chats through zoom, is sharing with us as part of our day-in-the-life series.
“From the start of my career, I was passionate about pumps and technologies involved in the water and wastewater field. I had gotten opportunities to work for many national and international projects working in Grundfos Pumps, which is one of the largest and renowned pump companies worldwide. I had been awarded with many titles in Grundfos, like “Champion” etc. I worked closely with the big names in water treatment (Veolia, Suez) and learned lots of important technical details dealing with them. I deal with many consultants, architects, contractors, and end clients in Canada dealing in water and wastewater.
My usual day starts with a cup of coffee at “Tim Hortons”, and in the office it starts with reviewing project documents, performance curves, and datasheets. It’s not always the same routine as some days. I have to visit job sites and lots of clients meetings. After Covid-19 changed things, I still visit sites because water and wastewater is an essential service. Client meetings are limited to virtual online meetings only, which takes most of my time these days. I also give trainings virtually these days to my team regarding new products and technologies in our field. With the implementation of SAP CRM in our organization, our daily work has now been more documented. It helped in overall performance of the team and our daily work habits.
There is much good news in the pumping world, apart from COVID-19. For example, in the Canadian market, we have many new projects which are already lined up and some are even launched for 2020 and beyond. As an Engineer, I always feel excited about innovation in the industry – IoT and Automation help to obtain real-time data, and while there is still so much more technology in our field to explore, I also believe that our industry should focus more on clean and renewable energy sources. We should collectively work on strengthening the environmental norms for our future generations.
My day usually ends with time spent with people I care about. I read books from the authors including Nicholas Sparks, Robert Kiyosaki, Jeanine Cummins, and Rhonda Byrne. I admit that I never miss a chance to think or speak about pumps -even at home, which is truly my first love.”
