Yokogawa Systems Receive ISO17894 Certification for Shipboard Use

Yokogawa Electric Corporation announces that Lloyd’s Register, a world leading certification organization, has certified that its products comply with the ISO17894 standard on the shipboard use of programmable electronic systems, and are suitable for use on LNG carriers and floating production units. This certificate has been issued for the CENTUM® VP and CENTUM® CS 3000 integrated production control systems, which are the company’s flagship products, and for the ProSafe®-RS safety instrumented system.

Safety and protecting the environment are primary concerns of owners and operators of ships and other floating vessels used in the oil and gas industry, so the products that they use must be reliable and of high quality. They tend to look for vendors of programmable electronic systems that comply with ISO17894. Yokogawa has a good track record in this sector, having received control systems orders for a total of 47 LNG carriers.

Encouraged by this certification of ISO17894 compliance, Yokogawa aims to expand its control business in the oil and gas marine sector by targeting growth segments such as LNG carriers and floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessels.

ISO 17894

This provides a set of mandatory principles, recommended criteria and associated guidance for the development and use of dependable marine programmable electronic systems for shipboard use. It applies to any shipboard equipment containing programmable elements which may affect the safe or efficient operation of the ship. It contains information for all parties involved in the specification, operation, maintenance and assessment of such systems. As indicated by the awarding of this ISO17894 certification, the reliability of Yokogawa’s products and the efficacy of its quality management system are well recognized in the marketplace.

The certification organizations that have issued this type of  approvals for CENTUM VP, CENTUM CS 3000, and ProSafe-RS are the American Bureau of Shipping, Bureau Veritas (France), Lloyd’s Register (UK), and Det Norske Veritas (Norway). The systems software has this type of approval in the form of a Software Conformity Assessment Certificate from Lloyd’s Register. These certification organizations prescribe the conditions and performance requirements for the equipment and systems used on ships and offshore floating production units. Specifically, the systems and equipment are required to operate normally under the conditions of listing, vibration, electromagnetic interference, and power supply voltage fluctuation that exist in an offshore environment. Equipment and systems must meet these stringent requirements in order to receive this type of approval.
