With oil and gas pipeline safety so critical, new fiber optic cable (FOC) technology is now being used to vastly improve leak detection in real-time. Temperature Sensing and Acoustic Sensing are two methods of leak detection that rely on FOC. The fibers are made of glass and are immune to signal interference that causes problems for traditional sensors. FOC life is 10 times that of individually placed conventional sensors.
This new technology for in-ground pipelines requires a cable to be run outside for the entire length. The system is monitored at junction points and must be regularly tested at various locations along the pipeline. The testing uses Hydra-Cell H25/D25 pumps to inject non-potable water at high pressure into the ground near the pipeline to simulate a leak. A successful test will be confirmed at the junction point.
The seal-less design of Hydra-Cell provides efficient operation and smooth, constant pressure. With its small footprint, Hydra-Cell is also ideal in the mobile testing system that travels as a truck-mounted unit.
