Meet a Woman Engineer: Julie Ballard, P.E.

“This job is a great scientific adventure. But it’s also a great human adventure.” ~Fabiola Gianotti, Higgs Boson physicist

KSB Inc. is celebrating Engineers Week (Feb 18-24, 2018) by allowing Empowering Pumps to shine a light on some of their most talented engineering professionals! We had the great honor of talking with Julie Lewicki Ballard, P.E., (above right) Project Engineering Manager with KSB, and this is what she had to share:

Q. How did you decide to become an engineer? What inspired you?

Julie: Honestly, I stumbled into engineering because of my love of math, science, and physics.  My high school guidance counselor suggested it as an area of study in college. It seemed more up my alley than the traditional career paths of other women in my family (nurse, teacher, or housewife). I am so grateful that my counselor recognized my aptitude for engineering. She changed the course of my life.

Q. What do you love most about being an engineer?

Julie: I’ve always loved solving puzzles. As an engineer, I get paid to solve puzzles! Solving engineering challenges takes tenacity and ingenuity, but it is incredibly rewarding to find and implement solutions.

Q. What advice would you give to the next generation of engineers?

Julie: Every engineer takes pride in their collection of spreadsheets filled with complicated, meticulously composed formulas.  It’s easy to get lost in the details.  Don’t forget to walk away from your computer now and then to spend time at the water cooler.  While technical skills are the foundation of your career, it is through relationships that you will be able to communicate all your great ideas.

On behalf of the entire Empowering Brands’ team, THANK YOU for your contributions to the Pump Industry! We look forward to keeping in touch with you over the course of your career!
