Our Industry Person of the Week is Carla Minett, Founder & Principal Consultant of Minett Consulting, which specializes in empowering manufacturing companies to develop and retain their next generation of engineering leaders.
Q: How did you get started working in your field?
Carla: When I worked in Corporate as an Engineer, I embarked on a journey of growth and development opportunities that marked the pivotal moment in my career. But at first, I felt stuck in a work environment that led me to wonder what else could be out there for me. Around that time, I stumbled upon a professional development opportunity that I jumped into and it opened a series of doors that enabled me to be where I am today. I took my first-hand experience and my lessons-learned and I became a Leadership Program Strategist. In this role, I am able to help organizations create opportunities for their high-potential employees to grow and develop, and thrive in their companies.
Q: What do you love the most about your job? What are you most proud of?
Carla: What I love about my job is that I can create an impact on this world through others. By creating opportunities for growth and development for employees to reach their full potential, I feel a part of the transformation, and that is very satisfying to me. It also excites me to know that I am drawing attention to a very needed area that often gets overlooked, such as investing in the development of employees to prepare them for future leadership roles. I am most proud of making the leap into starting my own business; even though it was scary, I knew it was right for me. I am also very proud of being a woman Engineer and someone who wants to help others succeed.
Q: What advice would you give to someone considering this line of work or new to the field?
Carla: I would advise someone considering this line of work to talk to a few people who are already doing it, and learn what it truly is like to run a business like this. They should consider what kind of lifestyle they want to live when choosing their business model. I would also suggest they validate their business idea before spending money on a website and content.
Q: Can you talk about a project you recently worked on?
Carla: One recent project I worked on was developing a resource for mentors and mentees to have more effective meetings. Mentees often don’t know what to expect or how to maximize their mentoring session, so this resource assists them in preparing by gathering information they will need ahead of time.
