Brittany Kelley, Design Engineer II for A.W. Chesterton Company

It’s so great to see peers nominate each other! Our Industry Person of the Week is Brittany Kelley, Design Engineer II with A.W. Chesterton Company. Here’s what she has to share!

Q. How did you get started working in your field?

Brittany: When I came to Chesterton, I was looking for a place where I could push myself and learn in a collaborative environment. The fluid sealing industry is a place where I am able to find diversity in work and see a real world impact. I went to McGill University for Materials Engineering and was able to gain experience in mining and mineral processing through the co-op program there. This gave me a background in a prominent field that the fluid sealing industry serves. Being part of Chesterton has allowed me to expand upon an industry I was already familiar with in a new way and use my materials knowledge to help solve problems around the world, beyond the scope of an individual plant.

Q. What do you love the most about your job? What are you most proud of?

Brittany: Being able to work on new development projects is very rewarding because I am able to be a part of something new and in demand. As industry needs evolve, we have to be ready to deliver products that suit their requirements. I am proud of the impact Chesterton has on industry and how we ensure our products deliver improved reliability and safety while also reducing environmental impact.

Q. What advice would you give to someone considering this line of work or new to the field?

Brittany: The best way to enter into any new job or industry is to have a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and desire to learn. Ask as many questions as possible and understand why things are done a certain way. The more a person understands about a subject or situation, the better one can find ways to improve.

Q. Can you talk about a project you recently worked on?

Brittany: Recently, I have been part of developing a high temperature control valve packing. The team is focusing on meeting ISO 15848-1 at elevated temperatures to help plants meet ever-tightening emissions regulations. The project has successfully tackled material limitations that previously made sealing emissions to these temperatures difficult. The team is very excited about the impact this will make in industry because it will help eliminate valves from the “bad actor” list, ensuring better reliability and lower emissions within plants.

Thank you, Brittany! We look forward to keeping up with you through the #PumpTalk Community!
