Specialty High Temperature & Stainless Submersible Pumps for Pharmaceutical

The pharmaceutical industry relies heavily on pumps for efficiently producing and processing drugs and medicines. Selecting the right submersible pump in this type of environment can be the difference in hundreds of thousands of dollars since a pump outage can mean a production shutdown. In this article, we will examine the specialty stainless steel and/or high-temperature BJM submersible pumps that can be used for various applications within the pharmaceutical industry.

These pumps have highly effective advantages with specific applications.

  1.  Autoclaves – An autoclave, also known as a steam sterilizer, is a machine that uses pressurized steam to sterilize pharmaceutical instruments and other materials that are used within the manufacturing process. Items are placed in the autoclave vessel and heated to a high temperature and pressure for a specified time, usually around 250°F and 15 psi for 15-20 minutes. During the final phase of the sterilization process, the sterilizer drain is opened and steam is removed from the vessel. During this process, the high temperature steam is introduced with water that goes to a sump. Since the water in this sump is still seeing temperatures between 150°F -200°F, BJM’s Fahrenheit pumps (the only submersible pump in the market capable of pumping liquids up to 200F continuously) are often used to transfer this water out of the sump.
  2. CIP Processes: Clean-in-Place (CIP) is a process used in the pharmaceutical
industry to clean and sterilize equipment without taking it apart. CIP uses a sequence of chemicals, heat, and water to remove contaminants from the equipment’s surface. Submersible pumps are used to remove CIP fluid from the process vessel and pipework, and either return it for recycling or send it to waste treatment. Due to the wide range of pH levels from acids to caustics used within this process, along with the high temperature water, BJM’s 316 stainless-steel Fahrenheit submersible pumps are often used along with EPDM seals for corrosion resistance.
  3.  Wastewater Treatment – Pharma plants require their own water treatment facilities (pre-treated before it goes to municipal system) so as not to contaminate municipalities’ lines:

Acid waste is effluent collected from typically fume hood sinks and/or lab sinks where some sort of chemistry is being used and the waste is either an extreme acid or extreme base, both of which are bad for a wastewater system. Most municipalities require waste to be treated to be close to the perfect neutral of 7.

Bio waste is similar to the above, except the waste contains pathogens or biologics that need to be captured prior to being dumped into a municipal sewer. BJM’s 316 stainless steel solids handling submersible pumps with EPDM seals are designed to handle this type of environment well.

Corrosive chemicals, equipment sterilization requirements, and hazardous runoff are commonly found in pharmaceutical and medical manufacturing plants. Plant engineers need to manage effluent while ensuring environmental, health, and safety requirements. Industrial Flow Solutions provides a broad range of corrosion resistant, solids handling, non-clog, and dewatering pumps to handle the pharmaceutical and medical industries toughest challenges.

Whether the pump is used in the cleaning process or for waste treatment, diverse high-temperature and corrosive-resistant BJM submersible pumps offer highly efficient, stainless steel solutions.
