Fred Walker, Weir Floway, Inc., Recognized For His Contributions To The Hydraulic Institute

Fred Walker, Vice President, Engineering, Weir Floway, Inc., was recognized by the Hydraulic Institute for his technical leadership and contributions in the creation of ANSI/HI Standards.

Mr. Walker was Chair of the committee which produced Rotodynamic Pumps for Assessment of Applied Nozzle Loads, ANSI/HI 9.6.2-2011. This new standard contains explanatory information regarding the criteria for pump nozzle loading allowances and includes more detail regarding the material requirements for pump casings and hold-down bolts. The standard also contains new and improved graphics to support the text and enhance user understanding. Also, the equations and methodology are explained using more sample problems and greater educational content.
The Hydraulic Institute Standard for Rotodynamic Pumps for Hydraulic Performance Acceptance Tests, ANSI/HI 14.6-2011 is destined to become the new global reference for factory testing of pumps. The new standard supersedes the Centrifugal Pump Test Standard (ANSI/HI 1.6-2000) and the Vertical Pump Test Standard (ANSI/HI 2.6-2000). Mr. Walker participated in the development of this standard which now includes six acceptance grades instead of two that were included in the 2000 versions. Tolerance bands have been developed that will be of interest to those concerned with energy efficiency. Acceptance grades with bilateral tolerances and acceptance grades with unilateral tolerances are defined. Default acceptance grades based on the purchaser’s application are available to guide the pump community (used when there is no specific test acceptance grade in the contract document). The standard contains tolerances for pumps with low horsepower input. Also the new HI 14.6-2011 standard contains new graphics and content that provide readers with insight into NPSH testing. In addition, it contains special test techniques related to model testing to predict performance of pumps too large to test by conventional means.
HI Pump Standards are reliable, widely accepted references for anyone involved in pumps, including users, consultants, contractors, construction firms, manufacturers of pumps, seals, motors, instrumentation, controls, and pump software developers and systems integrators. HI periodically introduces new standards based on industry needs. HI’s complete library of ANSI/HI standards for the pump industry is user-friendly, and available in both electronic and print formats at eStore.Pumps.org, or by calling the Hydraulic Institute’s purchasing line at: 973.267.9700 Ext 118.
