Pump Person of the Week – David Lee

Empowering Pumps recently invited people in the Pump Industry to Nominate a Pump Professional! We have received a great many nominations for several talented individuals currently working in the industry! This week, we are shining the spotlight on a Program Manager of Product Development with Armstrong Fluid Technology.

David Lee, who is currently a member of the ASHRAE Toronto Chapter and the ASHRAE Technical Committees 1.11 & 6.1, and is serving as Program Subcommittee Chair for TC 6.1. , has spent the last 5 years developing award-winning products incorporating Armstrong’s innovative Design Envelope technology.

Q: I understand that, prior to joining Armstrong, you spent more than 10 years in the fluid handling equipment industry. How did you get into the Industry?

David: My first role out of university was as an Applications Engineer for a pump and mixer manufacturer. I started off developing and updating their sizing selection software, since I had experience coding from previous summer internships. Over time, I learned the technical side of the hydraulics business and later took on more responsibilities as I gained more experience.

Q: What do you love about your career in the industry?

David: It’s the unique opportunity to bring new products to the market and shape the building industry. On the product side, we’ve introduced a number of innovative energy-efficient pump solutions in our Design Envelope product launches. Product developments are filled with unknowns and not every project makes it to market, so it’s exciting to see them launched and successfully installed in buildings after all the hard work that was put into them. I’m also proud of participating in the various industry technical committees and conferences where I’ve learned from and also influenced my peers in the industry, co-authored several chapter updates in the handbook, and spoken at a number of conferences.

Q: Do you have any advice for someone new to the industry?

David: It’s always challenging starting off, but treat every experience as an opportunity to learn. Ask a lot of questions to really understand why things are the way they are – there are people willing to help you in your professional development. And strive to always improve.

Thank you, David, for your continued contributions to the Pump Industry! We look forward to following your career and achievements.
