Pump Maintenance Mistakes Checklist

A pump is an expensive piece of any water system. Maybe not the most expensive, but certainly not the least. However, only a small fraction of a pump’s lifetime costs are the purchase price on day one. Operating and maintenance costs are borne over the life of the pump, and can only snowball with mistakes […]

Selecting the Right Bearings to Improve Vertical Turbine Pump Reliability

Selecting the Right Bearings to Improve Vertical Turbine Pump Reliability Vertical Turbine Pumps (VTPs) are available in a variety of configurations and are used for a number of different applications, such as flood control, cooling water, waste water, and drinking water supply. One of the biggest contributors to pump failures is issues involving the pump […]

Torque Measurement Precision: Why the Overload vs. Overrange Distinction Matters for Quality Control

Why properly understanding and differentiating between overload and overrange helps to maintain the accuracy and longevity of the torque meter. Two easily overlooked, yet extremely critical, parameters when evaluating and specifying torque transducers are mechanical overload rating and electrical overrange. Each is important but often confused and misunderstood.

Implementing Predictive and Prescriptive Digital Maintenance Technologies for Rotating Equipment

Business and operations systems are becoming increasingly integrated in the digital era. With accessible data and information, enhancing the business value of plants that utilize equipment for production has become more achievable. Improving equipment performance and availability leads to increased production, fundamentally enhancing overall plant value. Rotating equipment plays a vital role in process industries, […]

Building a Centrifugal Pump Digital Twin for a Chemical Plant

A digital twin represents a physical asset and its function; it contains intelligence to evaluate static and real-time data. Chemical refining plants are asset intensive and employ a wide range of rotating and static equipment. Chemical refining plants make biofuels, alcohols, automotive coatings and chemicals used downstream in other chemical processes. Centrifugal pumps are used […]

Autonomous Fontan pump: Computational feasibility study

A double-inlet, double-outlet rotary pump was designed to augment Fontan flow through the total cavopulmonary connection. Pump power is supplied by a systemic arterial shunt and radial turbine, with a closed-loop shunt return to the common atrium. Computational fluid dynamic analysis and lumped parameter modeling of pump impact on the Fontan circulation was performed.

Hydraulic design of a centrifugal LOX pump, including cavitation modeling

The study shows the design and optimization of a LOX centrifugal pump with CFturbo/CFturbo BLADERUNNER 2025.R1 for a fictional rocket engine powered by LOX/RP-1, which delivers around 250 kN thrust at an exit velocity of 3,000 m/s. Current designs such as the medium-weight SpaceX Falcon 9 launcher or the much smaller RFA ONE from Rocket […]

BEP Pump System Optimization Study of a Canola Oil System

Ishwar Dhere, Process Engineer with Stantec Resourcenet India was tasked with analyzing estimated pump head, normal operating line velocities, and pressure analysis for a new canola oil processing system. The system consists of multiple pumps, atmospheric tanks, vacuum tanks, hydrodynamic reactors, heat exchangers, centrifugal separators, bleaching and basket filters, strainers, mixers, and control valves.

CFturbo BLADERUNNER: Centrifugal Pump Design and Model Variation

CFturbo, the conceptual Turbomachinery design code, enables engineers to design high-efficiency centrifugal pumps straightforwardly from scratch, or based on a given reference geometry. The all-new CFturbo BLADERUNNER uses Computational Fluid Dynamics (3D-CFD) technology to provide pump performance curves whose accuracy falls within the measurement tolerance of the subsequent test bench runs. In this example, an […]

Performance Prediction: A Unique Approach for the Aftermarket

Hydro’s software has allowed CFTurbo to improve the optimize the performance of equipment and its fit to its system to make dramatic efficiency and reliability improvements for their customers. Pumps at first glance appear to be very simple machines. To the layman, there are a number of castings and turned parts bolted together that move […]

Corrective vs. Preventive Maintenance: Which is Better?

Corrective Maintenance This is performed only after a failure occurs in the equipment, which can lead to unexpected downtime and costly repairs. Although it is a less expensive approach initially, it can result in greater production losses and high costs if the failure is significant.
