Meet our Industry Person of the Week Shai Goldman, Techno Seal LTD. VP Marketing and Service Manager.
Q: How did you get started working in your field?
Shai: I always loved technical stuff and also loved solving problems, which led me to take on significant roles in the industry. After numerous projects and people that I managed, I had an opportunity to move to a marketing company that also provides service for the products it sells. I had the academic background in both Marketing and Mechanical Engineering, and it seemed at the time like a golden opportunity to do something different, more people-oriented, while still using the engineering knowledge and experience already in my toolkit.
For the last 15 years, that’s what I have been doing. Altogether, I bring more than 30 years of experience, and I see that I am now doing exactly what the saying refers to: do what you love and love what you do.
Q: What do you love the most about your job? What are you most proud of?
Shai: What I love about my job is that every single day is different. Some days I travel to customers, some days I’m in our workshop repairing products, and other days I’m visiting trade shows or giving lectures about our products or solutions tailored to a customer’s needs.
I feel proud every time a customer tells me that a repair we completed solved a shutdown issue. I’m also proud when I receive a new purchase order from a customer after helping solve a problem with our products, or even better, when I offer advice, they apply it successfully, and call back to thank me. It’s not always about the money. For me, it’s about building long-term relationships with people over many years.
Q: What advice would you give to someone considering this line of work or new to the field?
Shai: The advice I would give to someone considering this line of work is to be respectful to everyone, including your competitors. Be very patient, because your value will grow slowly. But one day, you’ll be able to look back and say to yourself, that’s me, and I did it my way.
Q: Can you talk about a project you recently worked on?
Shai: Recently, we managed to improve a customer’s MTBF by upgrading their mechanical seals. The customer, a refinery, had experienced repeated mechanical seal failures at a specific location and had been complaining about it quite frequently.
After conducting an on-site observation of the pump, I collected all relevant data from their computerized system and took a sample of the pumped media for laboratory analysis. We discovered that the installed mechanical seals were not suitable for the application. The model was incorrect, and the construction materials were not compatible with the operating conditions.
Following the evaluation process and installation of the properly selected seal, the MTBF improved from 3 months to 15 months. It was a great success, delivering strong ROI for the customer and a lot of satisfaction for everyone involved.
Q: Anything else you would like to add?
Shai: Always be positive and trust the process. Build strong, professional relationships with reliable suppliers, and continuously improve your knowledge. Growth comes from experience, learning, and the right partnerships.
