Our Industry Person of the Week is Joe Collins. Joe is the Senior Mechanical Engineer at Vaughan Chopper Pumps.
Q: How did you get started working in your field?
Joe: I had always heard “necessity is the mother of invention” when the opportunity arose to join the Vaughan team I realized that I would have the chance to create solutions for problems that plague everyone worldwide.
Q: What do you love the most about your job? What are you most proud of?
Joe: Working at Vaughan gives me an opportunity to use the 4 decades of mechanical experience I have acquired in a setting that produces equipment that will make people’s lives cleaner, safer, and more enjoyable. I also appreciate the open team concept here that allows me to teach younger generations the work ethic and desire needed to keep our industry thriving for long-term environmentally friendly solutions.
Q: What advice would you give to someone considering this line of work or new to the field?
Joe: Focus on learning as much as you can about the problems you are asked to solve. Stay open to training opportunities and understand that while you will work hard the payoff in personal and professional satisfaction is immeasurable.
Q: Can you talk about a project you recently worked on?
Joe: We recently designed a new submersible turbo mixer at Vaughan that will keep solids entrained in solutions making them easier to pump. It is a very efficient and self-contained fix to the problem of solids setting up in tanks which causes foaming and limits storage space. It is also adaptable to many of the rail systems currently in use at facilities across the globe.
Q: Anything else you would like to add?
Joe: Vaughan Company has a lot of training resources available (online and onsite) and I encourage everyone to take us up on the offer to learn more about waste and water management!
