Our Industry Person of the Week is Florian Walter, Product Manager with Watson Marlow Fluid Technology Group. Here is what he had to share!
Q. How did you get started working in your field?
Florian: I have a mechanical engineering and business economics background. I started in the pump business back in 2011 when I was an Area Sales Manager at MasoSine responsible for several countries around the world. At this time I saw many different applications and technologies and gained my experiences within the world of pumps. In 2014, I took the opportunity to switch to MasoSine Product Manager as I wanted to use my knowledge improving our existing products and drive the development of new products that will be needed in the future.
Q. What do you love the most about your job? What are you most proud of?
Florian: It’s an ambitious task to remain ahead of competition; you’ll be faced every day with something new, and you have to find new ways to keep on the top of the business. The most important project I worked on since joining Product Management was the new development of our MasoSine Certa pump series – especially for the Food and Beverage sector. This pump is the benchmark regarding gentle product handling and cleanability which is even proven by EHEDG Type EL ASEPTIC Class I. Furthermore all product contact items are made of food grade materials to cope with all requirements of our customers.
Q. What advice would you give to someone considering this line of work or new to the field?
Florian: If it’s about product development, you need not just to listen to the feedback you get when talking to your audience, you have to also read between the lines. Often customers learned to live with a certain procedure or process without realizing that it could be improved with a modification or another type of equipment. You have to be able to understand the entire picture of the customer needs, even when they don’t realize yet that improvements are possible.
Q. Can you talk about a project you recently worked on?
Florian: There are several different development projects we’re currently working on to address the needs of our customers, improve their processes, and maintain the pumped products. The most important one was the development of our MasoSine Certa pump range as already mentioned above.
Q. Anything else you would like to add?
Florian: WMFTG, as an international technology leader within peristaltic pumps, sinusoidal pumps and associated fluid path technologies, is one of the best places to work for people who want to make a big change to the business.
