Our Industry Person of the Week is Christen Mancini, Marketing Team Lead at Hydro, Inc.
Q: How did you get started working in your field?
Christen: I’m the third generation of my family in the pump/pump systems industry, so it must be in the genes! I started out writing and editing root cause reports for my dad’s business, which was focused on engineering consulting and reliability improvements for pumps. I was lucky that I was able to absorb a lot of the knowledge he gained through his work both in the design and aftermarket side of the pump business, and even luckier that he made a point of bringing me out into the field and including me in root cause discussions to help me build up my own experience base.
Q: What do you love the most about your job? What are you most proud of?
Christen: I love the people that I work with and I love being able to form connections between different divisions and different viewpoints within Hydro.
Q: What advice would you give to someone considering this line of work or new to the field?
Christen: The pump industry is a tight-knit community with a lot of knowledge to share. My advice would be to find a mentor willing to share some of their experience and make an effort to get out into the field to talk to end users about their experiences. Some of the best ideas come out of stepping out of your mindset and what you think is best based on your own experiences and listening to the challenges that others are facing.
Q: Can you talk about a project you recently worked on?
Christen: I’ve really enjoyed working on Hydro’s new digital maintenance modules and seeing how what used to be a paper procedure is transformed into an interactive, visual interface that aligns with the way the new generation of workers consumes information.
