Our first Industry Person of the Week of 2023 is Atul Arora, an experienced operations manager.
Q: How did you get started working in your field?
Atul: Being a chemical engineer I worked in operations of steel, pulp & paper, and now biofuels project as well as operation. After graduating from Thapar institute of Engineering and Technology I got placed in one of India’s largest steel plant, and thereafter switched to an agro-based paper-making company. After the wheat straw-based paper-making unit I got an opportunity to work for German based biofuel company with its own patented technology.
Q: What do you love the most about your job? What are you most proud of?
Atul: Challenges in the current setup is what I like the most. Doing unconventional things and creating or setting an example for other plants as almost everything at such level is done for the first time in the country. Overcoming challenges with resilience and perseverance make me feel proud.
Q: What advice would you give to someone considering this line of work or new to the field?
Atul: Stay focused on your job and never stop learning. Always have an open positive mind toward new initiatives or alternate solutions.
Q: Can you talk about a project you recently worked on?
Atul: Optimise power consumption in the straw processing unit. To reduce specific power consumption by working on straw processing speed and pumping efficiency.
Q: Anything else you would like to add?
Atul: I have saved costs in every segment of the plant where I worked be it procurement, logistics, or operations. My peers or seniors know me for my unique problem-solving skills.
