This week’s Industry Person of the Week is Arthi Vasudevan, Senior Product Manager, Cybersecurity at Nexus Controls, a Baker Hughes business.
Q: How did you get started working in your field?
Arthi: As an engineer, I was inspired by General Electric’s (GE) mission to solve world’s complex problems, to bring energy to people around the world, and to make people’s lives better. Having worked in the downstream, upstream, and midstream sectors with GE and now Baker Hughes, I’ve realized how most people don’t realize how much effort and technology goes into getting energy and power to the hands of those in need. I’ve always loved the innovation and opportunities in the energy industry.
Q: What do you love the most about your job? What are you most proud of?
Arthi: I lead the Cybersecurity product line for Nexus Controls, responsible for defining the technical and commercial strategy to provide end-to-end cybersecurity solutions to industrial customers through the Nexus OTArmor portfolio. I’m most proud of my talented team at Baker Hughes, alongside inspiring leaders who genuinely care for my growth. In my current role, we’re trying to scale the business by multi-folds in the next few years. It’s humbling to be a part of something big like that – to work across several business functions, co-create the strategy with them, make positive changes to the culture, and directly contribute to growth and profitability.
Q: What advice would you give to someone considering this line of work or new to the field?
Arthi: Every industry has challenges. Always remind yourself of the “why” you do of “what” you do. If you’re in a male dominated industry, take it as a challenge to promote gender diversity and to normalize difficult conversations instead of settling for the status quo or limiting your options. Build meaningful connections with your professional and community networks.
Q: Can you talk about a project you recently worked on?
Arthi: I recently graduated from an MBA at Rice University. As part of the capstone project, my team started from ground up to set up a youth coaching program for immigrants and refugees at Houston ISD by partnering with an NGO. It has been a challenging yet rewarding experience to utilize coaching skills to help build effective leadership and shape the lives of young adults who don’t have access to such resources. I realized that when the mission is clear and the team is motivated, anything is possible!
Q: Anything Else you would like to add?
Arthi: Whatever industry you are in, and regardless of your job title, always keep the customer in mind and have a clear vision on how your role relates to your organization’s overall strategy. For career growth, always be proactive, seek out stretch assignments to expand your horizon and to break the glass ceiling, rather than waiting to be promoted based on your hard work.
