Problem
In Gainesville, Georgia, a major poultry processor operates at a scale of more than 2 million chickens per week. During production, chicken blood, feathers, and entrails collect in sumps beneath the conveyor lines.
The plant relied on air-operated diaphragm (AODD) pumps to move this waste, but the system proved costly and inefficient. The abrasive mixture of blood and solids wore down pump components quickly, requiring rebuilds every month.
In addition, the AODD pumps struggled with frequent clogging and downtime. Beyond the mechanical issues, the compressed air system required to run the pumps added to operating expenses, making the entire setup unsustainable.
The plant needed a pumping solution that could handle heavy solids without clogging, resist abrasion, and run reliably without excessive maintenance or high operating costs.
Solution
To address these challenges, the poultry plant installed BJM Pumps® SK Series shredder pumps, specifically engineered for solids-laden wastewater.
The SK series shredder pumps use tungsten carbide-tipped impellers to effectively shred and move blood, feathers, and entrails without clogging.
Designed for durability, these pumps thrive in abrasive environments and maintain consistent performance even in the most demanding applications.
Since installation, the pumps have operated continuously without the need for maintenance. The SK Series shredder pumps have significantly reduced maintenance and operating costs. The plant has gained a reliable, long-term pumping solution that keeps production running smoothly.
