Pump And Mechanical Seal Reliability

July 16, 2019 @ 8:00 am - July 19, 2019 @ 5:00 pm

Flowserve

This course provides the participant a better understanding of the reliability issues related to the interrelated functions of the centrifugal pump and mechanical seal, as they are operated in a complex pumping system under a variety of conditions. Participants learn how to identify and address causes of poor pump and mechanical seal reliability by focusing on mechanical and operational issues that can negatively affect pump and seal performance.

Basic pump and mechanical seal issues are discussed in the classroom, and then reinforced in the laboratories using actual pumps equipped with instruments to indicate flow, pressure, temperature, and power consumption. The pumps are operated by the students themselves. 60% classroom, 40% labs.

Specific topics include:

  • Review of centrifugal pump basics
  • Pump operating conditions that affect both pump and seal reliably
  • Mechanical issues that affect pump and seal reliability
  • Troubleshooting centrifugal pump failures
  • The effects of the various types of cavitation in a mechanically sealed pump.
  • The importance of proper clearances in a centrifugal pump.
  • Review of mechanical seal basics
  • Mechanical seal installation, commissioning and operation
  • Detailed steps to mechanical seal troubleshooting
  • Seal failure case studies

AUDIENCE

This course builds upon level 1 pump and mechanical seal courses. Experienced operations and maintenance personnel and engineers with at least 1 or more years of field experience are preferred.
