A model in AFT software is only a representation of a physical system. Properly calibrating a model to field data is often the first step in hydraulic analysis, ensuring changes to the model will be reflected by the physical system.

There is often uncertainty when modeling existing systems, modifying piping and components to capture degradation, identifying inaccurate drawings or datasheets, or capturing unusual components as resistance curves.
