AC motors have been used with Variable Frequency Drives for many years and with great success. Utilizing a VFD in lieu of a traditional starter or even soft starter reduces in rush currents, prevents mechanical stresses on the driven equipment and infrastructure and also may result in great energy savings. When the motor is powered by this type of control, consideration should be taken to ensure a good installation by knowing the concerns of utilizing this type of control and reviewing the required grounding requirements, grounding products and solutions.
Attendees will leave with the ability to:
Identify the most common motor failures
Understand the effects of common mode voltage as related to motor bearings
Identify bearing damage which may be applicable to common mode voltage
Ensure proper motor grounding requirements
To be aware of motor shaft grounding devices
