Our Industry Person of the Week is Sanya Mathura, MLE. Sanya is a Managing Director/Senior Consultant at Strategic Reliability Solutions Ltd.
Q: How did you get started working in your field?
Sanya: I started working in the Lubrication industry about two years after graduating from university. While my bachelor’s was in Electrical & Computer Engineering, I had no background with oil! After I went for the interview for the position, someone on the panel called me and said, “Sanya, you have two things going against you, 1. You’re young and 2. You’re female but I don’t see those things as setbacks, I see them as opportunities. I know that you can be moulded and will aspire to be the best that you can”. After he put his faith in me, I absorbed everything that I could learn about lubrication and since then I have fallen in love with reliability and the roles that they play within our industry.
Q: What do you love the most about your job? What are you most proud of?
Sanya: I love that not everyday is the same, there is always a challenge and I Iove finding solutions to them! The part about my job that I really enjoy the most is imparting knowledge to others and sharing that knowledge with those who weren’t aware of it before. A lot of people find that lubrication and oil analysis is mystifying thus any opportunity that I get, I try to break it down to very simple levels so that we can all understand. When we all understand, we can work together to make things run more efficiently!
I am most proud of the way that Strategic Reliability Solutions Ltd has been able to bridge so many global gaps and really bring industries from health care to Oil & Gas together with the common understanding that reliability is at the heart of everything that we do. Once we get that right, we can only increase the productivity levels that we currently have and work together as a team to achieve a common goal.
Q: What advice would you give to someone considering this line of work or new to the field?
Sanya: Always keep reading and expanding your knowledge base! The field of lubrication is always changing (while remaining the same in some aspects) but like most fields evolution is always present! I would also advise them to keep asking questions, keep the curiosity going! That’s one of the best ways to find out how things work and to simplify them in your mind and that of the person explaining it to you.
Q: Can you talk about a project you recently worked on?
Sanya: We’ve been working on several projects over the last couple of weeks! We recently finished recording and uploading all of our content for On demand courses in lubrication to be hosted by eastpartnership.org and that was quite a journey from getting the content right to developing the quizzes and ensuring that the student support was available, it was quite a journey but we loved every minute of it! Can’t wait to share it with you all!
Q: Anything else you would like to add?
Sanya: If you haven’t checked out our upcoming book, then you should! It’s called Lubrication Degradation Mechanisms, A complete guide published by CRC Press. We guide the reader from the fundamentals of lubrication straight into identifying the types of degradation mechanisms, the lab tests involved and of course methods to deal with degradation. It really is a great book for anyone who has ever been interested in understanding why oil degrades and the ways to prevent it!
THANK YOU, SANYA! WE LOOK FORWARD TO KEEPING UP WITH YOU THROUGH THE #PUMPTALK COMMUNITY!
