Breakthrough in Wastewater Pumping

Xylem Inc. (NYSE: XYL), the global water technology company which yesterday spun off from ITT Corporation, has unveiled a revolutionary new wastewater pumping system, called Flygt Experior.  By combining advances to its state-of-the-art hydraulics, premium efficiency motors and intelligent controls in a unique concept, the new Flygt Experior offers up to 50 percent energy savings compared to conventional wastewater pumps in a package that is simple to install and easy to operate.

“Flygt Experior builds on the premise that to achieve the highest possible reliability, efficiency and simplicity, three fundamental functions— hydraulics, motors and controls— all have to be superior in performance and work seamlessly together,” said Anders Fredriksen, head of Xylem’s wastewater transport business area. “With the Flygt Experior, each critical function has been advanced by our team of world-class engineers and is optimized to work perfectly together. The result, we believe, is that Flygt is once again setting a new standard for premium wastewater pumping.”

Flygt Experior consists of advances to three main functions:
Range of Adaptive N-Hydraulics Extended
With the launch of Flygt Experior, the company will introduce an extended range of Adaptive N pumps, available on all N pumps between 1.3 and 7.4 kilowatts (kw), or 2.2 and 11 horsepower (hp).
When Flygt delivered the Adaptive N-technology in 2009, it introduced —in a new and unique way— sustained high efficiency with unrivalled self-cleaning functionality, which significantly reduced the total cost of ownership. The Adaptive N-technology allows the impeller to move axially upward when necessary to permit bulky materials or tough debris to pass through smoothly, significantly reducing stress on the shaft, seals and bearings.
Recognizing its ability to deliver superior clog-free performance and energy savings, the Adaptive N-technology has been nominated as a finalist for the Aquatech Innovation Awards (Transport and Storage category).  Earlier this year, the Adaptive N was awarded “The Most Innovative Product 2011” by the Water Environment Federation.
The Adaptive N builds on Flygt’s success with the core N-technology introduced in 1997, which uses a patented impeller design that effectively forces all obstacles through the pump to deliver energy savings of up to 25 percent and lower maintenance costs through greater clog resistance.
All-New Premium Efficiency Motors
Leveraging Flygt’s 50 years experience as the world’s leading designer and manufacturer of wastewater pump motors, Flygt Experior will be available with Premium Efficiency Motors up to 70 kw, or 105 hp. The motors have been optimized for wastewater pumping applications, including some models featuring a Line Started Permanent Magnet, or LSPM design.
All of the new motors comply with international Premium Efficiency Standard (IEC 60034-30), commonly referred to as IE3, and with the LSPM technology the Flygt motors supersede the nominal standard by up to four percent.  The LSPM design— the world’s first for a wastewater pump— was first introduced in a Flygt compact mixer in 2009.
Easy-to-Use SmartRun Controls Introduced
Flygt Experior’s SmartRun intelligent controls enable the pumping system to be pre-programmed and pre-set to handle any wastewater handling situation, making it very easy to install and operate.  The SmartRun controls optimize energy use and can reduce energy consumption by 30 percent compared to conventional on/off systems.
Fredriksen added, “Today there are generally two types of controls for wastewater pumping systems. Conventional on/off controls, which are simple to use but give limited opportunities to optimize functionality, and variable frequency drives which provide more fine-tuning possibilities but can be complicated to install and difficult to optimize. SmartRun solves this issue by combining the advanced functionality of a drive with a simple intuitive interface. While the internal functions are multifaceted, the interface is simple to operate.”
Combining the very best in hydraulics, motors and intelligent controls, Flygt Experior is the most reliable, energy efficient user-friendly wastewater pumping system available on the market today. A modular product range ensures that Flygt Experior can be customized and tailor made for specific needs.
