ABB’s Mission to Zero is a carbon neutral and energy self-sufficient ecosystem for industry, homes and cities.
While many discuss the steps needed to combat the ever-increasing consequences of climate change, at ABB, we are committed to shaping the future of industry, cities and energy, today.
We have put our decades of experience in electrification and pioneering digital technologies into practice to create a real-life, zero emission case study, which can be used to inspire change across multiple applications around the world.
At our flagship Busch-Jaeger subsidiary in Luedenscheid, Germany, we have proven how the energy transition can sustainably succeed with digital energy management. After a two-year design and construction phase, we have launched our first carbon neutral and energy self-sufficient production site in the world.
Featuring a solar power plant which will deliver around 1100 MWh of climate-neutral solar power a year, the installed ABB technology, which includes ABB’s scalable energy management system OPTIMAX® at its heart, will generate enough power to cover on sunny days 100 percent of the factories` power requirements. It will also reduce CO2 emissions by 630 tons per year.
At ABB, we wanted to find a solution that would enable us to accelerate the energy transition digitally and sustainably. We aimed to develop a solution that was scalable and flexible so it could be applied in all areas – from smart homes and smart buildings to smart transportation and the smart industry. We desired a solution that was decentralized and based on renewable energies to avoid unnecessarily expand electricity grids. Finally, we wanted a solution that is safe and enables the potential to be completely carbon neutral.
With this state-of-the-art site, we demonstrate the advantages of creating a system in which all components are digitally networked and controllable. This intelligent ecosystem enhances energy efficiency, sustainability and resource conservation, enabling a genuine zero emission future for industry and beyond.
