Michelle Segrest – Reporting for Empowering Pumps
At the largest chemical engineering and process industry trade show in the world, global innovation was the theme. Creating a sustainable future though the contribution of chemistry and process engineering is the challenge.
To address this challenge, more than 170,000 attendees from 100 countries joined 3,813 exhibitors from 56 countries at Messe Frankfurt for ACHEMA—World Forum and 31st International Trade Show for Process Industries.
At this year’s “global summit of innovation,” many new products and technologies for the chemical, pharma and food industry were showcased along with insightful presentations and panels focused on technology, sustainability and global solutions.
Prof. Dr. Rainer Diercks, Chairman of the Board of DECHEMA e.V., called this year’s ACHEMA a “melting pot of ideas.” Diercks also emphasized the need to enter into a dialogue with the public about issues such as water supply, food and health—all issues that can be addressed with industrial uses of pumping systems.
“We are living in a world of tomorrow,” he said, emphasizing that the question must be addressed of how to live in the future with regard to food, medical care, water and energy.
Prof. Dr. Stefan Hell, the current Nobel Prize Winner, gave the keynote speech. The General Manager of the German Association of Chemical Industries, Dr. Utz Tillmann, emphasized the importance of the innovation association of mechanical, electrical and chemical engineering for Germany as an innovation center.
Here are some highlights of technological innovations showcased at ACHEMA 2015 from Empowering Pumps partners:
A.W. Chesterton
A.W. Chesterton showcased its Chesterton® 4400 Dual Concentric Gas Seal, which provides the
benefits of gas seal technology while enhancing sealing reliability. It reduces gas consumption requirements and accommodates gas supply disruptions that are common during gas seal operation. This innovative design considers the operating parameters that are typically encountered during gas seal operation and accommodates these changes to maximize performance and enhance sealing process reliability.
Börger
Börger BmbH celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, and on this occasion, it presented the new
generation of Börger rotary lobe pumps at ACHEMA. Drawing from its 25 years of experience in
rotary lobe pump construction, it developed the new ONIXline pump. Börger rotary lobe pumps feature single-acting mechanical seals and elastomer coated rotor. Börger offers three product lines of rotary lobe pumps (Classic, Select, Protect), all with different shaft seals and a variety of optional equipment for a standard pump chamber.
Danfoss VLT
Danfoss, a leading supplier of AC drives, has a product range that extends from the well established VLT drives for central and decentral applications to motormount converters and softstarters to active and passive filters.
At ACHEMA, Danfoss presented its water-dedicated energy-efficient drive solutions—the VLT® AQUA Drive series. With specialized pump functions, it is tailored specifically to the needs of water and wastewater applications and delivers optimized energy savings.
Danfoss also displayed its extended range of frequency converters for 690 V installations, with a compact 1.1 kW device. Danfoss showcased its motor technology independence with flexible VLT® drives, optimized for control of all typical motors, from high efficiency SynRM to PM and standard asynchronous motors.
A brand new offering is the VLT® Plus Panel, a convenient tool for cabinet configuration designed to save many hours of work for plant engineers and planners.
Dickow Pump Company
Dickow Pumpen KG is a family-owned German company that has been manufacturing pumps since 1910. As a technical world leader in magnetic drive pumps, Dickow holds many patents, is ISO 9001 certified and is a supplier-partner of major chemical companies worldwide.
Dickow Pump specializes in supplying seal-less metallic centrifugal, multi-stage centrifugal and side channel pumps with a magnetic coupling.
The main advantage of the magnetic coupling is that the liquid pumped is hermetically sealed from the atmosphere. The driving power of the motor is transferred from the outer magnets through the containment shell to the inner magnet, which is connected, via a shaft, to the impeller. The inner and outer magnets are synchronously connected, meaning the pump speed is equal to the motor speed.
KSB AG
KSB is one of the world’s leading suppliers of pumps, valves, automation products and drives, as well as related services for a wide range of applications.
For ACHEMA, KSB produced a specific highlight for each day.
On Day 1, KSB promoted its Ecochem Non-Seal Canned Motor Pump, which can handle critical challenges in chemical applications. For Day 2, reverse engineering was the highlight of the day. KSB produces perfect reproduction and swift delivery of spare parts for rotating equipment and valves. Even badly worn parts can be reconstructed and optimized. On Day 3, KSB introduced the first digital app that can hear whether a pump is running at its optimum operation point. The KSB Sonolyzer measures the noise frequency of the asynchronous motor and checks whether there are potential energy saving options. The app uses an estimation algorithm that can be used on KSB pumps and other rotating equipment produced by other manufacturers. KSB promoted its chemical pump modular design on Day 4. Innovations like the MegaCPK and Magnochem can be crucial solutions for chemical applications.
NETZSCH
For more than 60 years, NETZSCH has manufactured positive displacement pumps worldwide. NETZSCH has supplied NEMO® progressing cavity pumps and TORNADO® rotary lobe pumps for almost every application.
NEMO® Progressing Cavity Pumps and TORNADO® Rotary Lobe Pump NEMO® Pumps have a broad application range and are used for the continuous, pressure-stable, gentle and low-pulsation conveyance of almost any substance. One advantage is that the valveless positive displacement pump is also reliable for transporting stringy material. TORNADO® Pumps are versatile and offer continuous and gentle conveyance while dosing in proportion to rotation speed. Due to their compact and service-friendly design they are ideal for installation in restricted places. New sizes of the TORNADO® T2 rotary lobe pump are now available.
The smaller version of the TORNADO all-metal pump T.Proc® – specifically developed for smaller volumetric flow rates in the process industry is now available and was exhibited at ACHEMA for the first time.
PCM Pumps
The PCM Delasco™ is ideal for corrosive, abrasive, delicate or solid-particles products pumping. The PCM Delasco™ range offers a large choice of low pressure and high pressure peristaltic pumps. With
various pump constructions and a wide choice of elastomers hoses, the PCM Delasco™ range allows coverage of a wide variety of applications calling for heavy-duty and flexibility.
Technical advantages include: only one wearing part (hose), sealless design, self-priming, reversibility, dry-running and reduced life cycle costs.
The PCM EcoMoineau™ C is the shortest progressing cavity pump in the market. It is 42 percent shorter and 57 percent lighter than the previous PCP series. Its revolutionary design combines the legendary performance and reliability of PCM Moineau™ technology with enhanced maintenance operations.
The patented connecting system has only three screws to optimize maintenance. The shaft line (rotor, coupling rod, driving shaft) can be removed without disconnecting the pipes and the design provides easy and independent access to each wearing part.
The EcoMoineau™ C is an eco-designed pump. It is lighter (thanks to fewer raw materials) and uses 10 percent less power than the previous generation. The EcoMoineau™ C pump is ideal for industry markets such as chemicals, minerals, paper and wastewater treatment.
