SUMMARY:Pump and Mechanical Seal Reliability
DESCRIPTION:This course provides the participant a better understanding of the reliability issues related to the interrelated functions of the centrifugal pump and mechanical seal\, as they are operated in a complex pumping system under a variety of conditions. Participants learn how to identify and address causes of poor pump and mechanical seal reliability by focusing on mechanical and operational issues that can negatively affect pump and seal performance. \nBasic pump and mechanical seal issues are discussed in the classroom\, and then reinforced in the laboratories using actual pumps equipped with instruments to indicate flow\, pressure\, temperature\, and power consumption. The pumps are operated by the students themselves. 60% classroom\, 40% labs. \nSpecific topics include: \n\nReview of centrifugal pump basics\nPump operating conditions that affect both pump and seal reliably\nMechanical issues that affect pump and seal reliability\nTroubleshooting centrifugal pump failures\nThe effects of the various types of cavitation in a mechanically sealed pump.\nThe importance of proper clearances in a centrifugal pump.\nReview of mechanical seal basics\nMechanical seal installation\, commissioning and operation\nDetailed steps to mechanical seal troubleshooting\nSeal failure case studies\n\n\nAUDIENCE \nThis course builds upon level 1 pump and mechanical seal courses. Experienced operations and maintenance personnel and engineers with at least 1 or more years of field experience are preferred.

SUMMARY:Improve efficiency in your existing HVAC system without investing in upgrades
DESCRIPTION:What You Will Learn  \nMany building owners and operators think of HVAC optimization projects as being too expensive to even consider. On the assumption that a project will involve replacing the biggest\, most expensive components they choose to continue operating inefficient systems\, and their operating outcomes suffer as a result. \nDuring the webinar Armstrong will present the answers to two questions.\n \n\nWhat if there’s no budget? What can I do to improve my HVAC efficiency without any investment in equipment upgrades?\n What if there’s only a small budget? What can I do to improve my HVAC efficiency without a big investment in upgrades?\n\nIn this session you will learn how you can optimize your current HVAC system\, without any equipment upgrades. We’ll present the steps you can take to maintain\, adjust or reset your system to squeeze the best possible performance out of the equipment you have. Drawing advice and data from industry studies we’ll show how building operators have saved up to 25% on one of their biggest operating expenses – keeping the building comfortable.

SUMMARY:Manufacturing Day
DESCRIPTION:What is MFG Day? \nAn annual event that allows manufacturers across the country to open their doors and open more minds to show what manufacturing really is in the 21st century. \nWhen does MFG Day happen? \nThe official kick-off of MFG Day each year happens on the first Friday in October. This year\, it will be October 4\, 2019. While many events will take place on that day\, as more states declare October as Manufacturing Month\, events are scheduled throughout the month. \nWhere do MFG Day events occur? \nMFG Day events occur at manufacturing facilities and educational institutions across North America. If you are interested in attending an event in your area\, we encourage you to check out the events page on mfgday.com to see what is taking place near you! Events can be searched by date as well as location. \nWhy is there a Manufacturing Day? \nModern manufacturing environments are commonly thought of as dark\, dangerous factories designed for low-skilled workers. MFG Day addresses this misperception by giving manufacturers an opportunity to open their doors and show\, in a coordinated effort\, what manufacturing really is today. Over the next decade\, manufacturers will need to fill 4.6 million jobs. These jobs offer long-term career opportunities\, high pay\, and exposure to cutting-edge technology and innovations. MFG Day is an opportunity to connect that future workforce to potential employers and change the narrative around manufacturing. Last year\, 275\,000 people participated in nearly 3\,000 MFG Day events across North America—and more than half said they are now more interested in pursuing a career in manufacturing or more likely to tell friends\, family\, parents or colleagues about manufacturing. \nWho should attend MFG Day events? \nMFG Day events are meant for anyone who is curious about modern manufacturing and who would like to know more about what happens in modern-day manufacturing facilities. Audiences include students\, parents\, educators\, media\, civic leaders and local communities in general.

SUMMARY:Valve Basics Seminar & Exhibits
DESCRIPTION:NOW OFFERING TWO 1.5-DAY COURSES! \n\nValves 101: Industrial Valves & Materials\nValves 201: Control Valves\, Automation and Special Applications\n\nHOUSTON AREA SAFETY COUNCIL \nPASADENA\, TX \nMore than 2\,000 people have taken one of VMA’s highly rated Valve Basics courses since the program was introduced in 2009. During the past decade\, our Valves\, Actuators & Controls 101 has expanded dramatically. What began as a 1-day course became 2 days\, and then recently has included three full days of education & training. Based on feedback from attendees\, we are modifying the curriculum to create two separate courses\, each lasting one-and-a-half days. \nThe first course\, Industrial Valves & Materials\, will cover the type of basic information that everyone in the industry should know—perfect for those who are very new to working with valves. The 101 course includes an overview of the industry\, as well as lessons on multi-turn\, check\, plug\, ball and butterfly\, pressure relief valves and materials. \nThe more complex flow control products that employ electronics and automation will be covered in in the 201 course: Control Valves\, Automation and Special Applications.  \nAs in the past\, each event includes a hands-on learning experience—the Valve Petting Zoo—that focuses on products covered in the classroom portion of the program . \nWHO SHOULD ATTEND? \nThis course was created specifically for newcomers to the industry so it is ideally suited for recent graduates and engineers in the early stages of their careers. In addition\, those who understand the basics of mechanical valves can expand their knowledge by attending the Electric portion of the program. Both courses can be taken\, or attendees can choose to attend one or another. \nAttendees typically include: \n\nA variety of professionals employed at plants and facilities that use or work with valves\, actuators and controls\nMore experienced professionals with knowledge of one specific product type but in need of an overview of the entire spectrum of valves\, actuators and controls.\nNew employees at valve\, actuator and control companies\nPersonnel from EPC or AEC firms who are involved with specifying valves\nDistributors and manufacturers’ reps who sell these products\nCompanies that provide supplies and services to the industry\nAnd anyone who could use a refresher course on valves\, actuators and controls!\n\nThe Valve Basics course has been well-received by upper-level mechanical engineering students who have attended previous seminars. Their participation is made possible by scholarships from association members and others interested in supporting valve training for the next generation. \nWHERE IS THE COURSE HELD? \nTo provide a large space in which to conduct our hands-on learning experience\, this event is being held at the Houston Area Safety Council (5213 Center Street\, Pasadena\, TX 77505). The council has a state-of-the-art training facility and abundant workshop space where products for the “Valve Petting Zoo” can be displayed\, from large to small\, from mechanical to electric. \nTABLETOP EXHIBITS \nThe Valve Basics event also includes a tabletop event. The schedule is still being worked out and we’ll post updated information as soon as it is available. \nWHO SHOULD EXHIBIT? \n\nU.S. or Canadian companies that sell or provide services to valve\, actuator and control manufacturers and end users of those products or services.\nNon-member manufacturers\, suppliers and distributor/channel partners may register\, but only if they are U.S. or Canadian based and would qualify for VMA or VRC membership.\n\nIf you are not sure whether your company qualifies\, please contact Abby Brown before registering.
